  The Blue Note is pleased to present the brilliant globetrotting trumpet/flugelhorn innovator, Ted Curson & his Octet. Ted's most recent Marge CD is entitled, "Pop Wine", a strictly straight ahead effort and his 27th album since his first solo release in 1961. Koch Jazz has also reissued a classic Atlantic 1965 date entitled, "The New Thing & The Blue Thing". Ted Curson was born in Philadelphia in 1935. He grew up hearing and performing with all the local Philly jazz greats including the Heath Brothers, John Coltrane, Bobby Timmons, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Lee Morgan. When Ted decided he was ready to make the big move to New York, he called his hero, Miles Davis, who endorsed his playing to peers and record company executives. Curson first came to the attention of jazz fans outside of Philly and New York in the early 1960s when he recorded with Cecil Taylor and played alongside Eric Dolphy in one of the most exciting bands Charles Mingus ever assembled. Ted has gone on to play and record with literally everyone, from Booker Ervin, Andrew Hill and Archie Shepp to Little Richard, Lloyd Price and Chuck Jackson. He's appeared at almost every major jazz festival and city in the world and hosted the Blue Note's popular Late Night Jam Sessions during the 1980s. Although his main instrument is the trumpet, Ted is also a master on the piccolo trumpet (usually a classical instrument), flugelhorn and is now dabbling in singing.

  Les Porto-Ricains ont joué un rôle fondateur grâce au tromboniste-compositeur Juan Tizol, premier musicien « blanc » engagé dans un orchestre « noir » - celui de Duke Ellington - en 1930 ; puis un rôle moteur dans l'aventure new-yorkaise du latin jazz (Ray Barretto, Tito Puente) et ensuite de la sa/sa (Pacheco, les frères Palmieri)... Les frères Gonzalez, Andy et Jerry, sont les héritiers de cette fabuleuse histoire. Leur quintette Fort Apache Band, est depuis vingt ans le meilleur combo d'un jazz latino à la fois expérimental et traditionnel, d'une volubilité fascinante.
  La fratrie Gonzalez fait ses débuts dans le Bronx à New York alors qu'ils sont encore adolescents. Remarqués dans un parc par Lew Matthews, le pianiste leur offre la possibilité de se produire chez lui où il invite chaque dimanche la crème des musiciens jazz du moment. Les deux frères lui en sont d'ailleurs infiniment reconnaissant et déclarent que Lew Matthews est « directement responsable de chaque chose qu'ils font aujourd'hui ». Il leur apprend la sophistication si caractéristique aujourd'hui de leur musique. Remarqués, Andy et Jerry jouent dans divers groupes de y'azz latino avant de rejoindre le New York College of Music. Andy fait ensuite « band » à part en rejoignant tout d'abord l'orchestre de Ray Barretto, puis en entamant une tournée de plus d'un an avec Dizzy Gillespie. Les deux frères sont enfin réunis lorsque Eddie Palmieri les engage en 1971 où ils découvrent les rouages de l'improvisation.
  C'est dans le début des années 80 que la première formation du Fort Apache Band fait son apparition : une quinzaine de membres dont Kenny Kirkland, Sonny Fortune, Steve Turre, Jorge Dalto, ou encore Milton Cardona. En 1989, à l'enregistrement du célèbre Rumba Para Monk, Fort Apache n'est plus qu'un petit quintette formé par les amis de longue date des frères Gonzalez : Steve Berrios à la batterie, Larry Willis au piano et Carter Jefferson au saxophone. Joe Ford, saxophoniste (alto et soprano) de son état, ne les rejoint qu'en 1991. Enfin, le dernier musicien à entrer dans le groupe est John Stubblefield (saxophone ténor), qui jouait jusqu'alors dans le groupe en tant qu'invité, et qui y prend place de manière permanente en 1993 après le décès de Jefferson. Steve Berrios, qui dirige son propre groupe : Son Bacheche, a la réputation d'être le batteur le plus consciencieux dans le monde du jazz et de la musique latine. Larry Willis a quant à lui étudié le chant à la Music and Art High School de New York avant que Hugh Masekela ne le convainque de se consacrer au piano. A 19 ans, Willis joue avec Jackie Mc Lean et accompagne des artistes majeurs sur plus de 250 enregistrements. Larry est d'ailleurs très apprécié par les frères Gonzalez pour sa faculté à adapter son jeu de façon souple mais entière au large panel de compositions abordées par le quintette.
  Toutes ces fortes personnalités et ces formidables musiciens se sont réunis dans un même but ; apporter un peu d'eux même à leur musique. Résultat : une musique riche et un répertoire varié, tel est le mot d'ordre du Fort Apache Band.

  Jerry Gonzalez has taken a global view of jazz in creating his unique brand of improvised music. While his trumpet and fluegelhorn reflects the influence of Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie, his personal cultural roots have given him a natural understanding of Afro-Cuban rhythms. As he explained to The Detroit News, "I am bilingual -- I speak Spanish and English. I can play the blues and I can play the rumba". Launching his musical career, in 1970, as a member of Dizzy Gillespie's band, Gonzalez briefly joined Eddie Palmieri in the group, El Son, the following year. He soon left to join timbale player Manny Oquendo's band, Conjunto Libre.Although he formed his own group, Yo Yo Me Cure, in 1980, Gonzalez didn't come into his own as a bandleader until forming Jerry Gonzalez And The Fort Apache Band with his brother and bassist Andy and drummer Steve Barrios. After recording two albums at European jazz festivals, the group came into their own with their third release, Rumba Para Monk, in 1989. In addition to topping the world beat group category in a readers' poll conducted by Downbeat, the album was named "jazz album of the year" by the Academie Du Jazz in France. Gonzalez has performed and or recorded with a lengthy list of jazz artists including Tony Williams, McCoy Tyner, Kenny Dorham, Anthony Braxton, Tito Rodriguez, Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Paquito D'Rivera and Machito.

Trompettiste et percussionniste (c'est rare !) il est depuis un quart de siècle, de toutes les innovations. C'est un peu comme si Monk, Mingus et le Miles d'avant revenaient se poser dans Spanish Harlem.

Crée en 1975, sous l’impulsion du percussionniste et compositeur américain Daoud-David Williams, ce big band varie de huit à une vingtaine de membres. Sa musique est riche, variée, reflétant parfaitement le caractère multiculturel du groupe. « A little oasis » compte 11 titres aux accents latin jazz, jazz vocal et jazz plus classique emprunts d’énergie, de positivité et de joie.
  De plus dans cet album, vous trouverez un DVD présentant « The Library », l’école de jazz créée par Daoud-David Williams, lieu de mixité et de rencontre communautaire.
  « A little oasis » est un îlot de bonheur que Fip vous conseille fortement !
